Double Comfort Foods, a social enterprise line of hot sauces and spice blends based in Columbus, has named Neighborhood Services Inc. in the University District as the recipient of its 2019 giveback campaign.

On the heels of winning national acclaim for its hot sauces, Double Comfort CEO Mary Lyski said she’s excited to continue producing superior products so the profits can be returned to the Central Ohio community. One hundred percent of Double Comfort Foods’ net profits are given back to a pantry. Each year, the Double Comfort Charitable Advisory Board selects a new recipient.

This year’s food pantry partner, NSI at 1950 N. Fourth St., serves residents living in ZIP codes 43201, 43202, 43210 and 43211.

Double Comfort was awarded first place for two of its products at the Fiery Food Challenge as part of the ZestFest in Irving, Texas, in late January. The company’s Blues City Cayenne Garlic Sauce and Three Sheets Cocktail Rimmer—two of its newest products—both won the Golden Chile Award, considered the most prestigious award of its kind. “In the world of hot sauces and chili peppers and all things spicy, there’s only one (award) that’s really at the top,” Lyski said. Local company CaJohn's also won awards in the annual contest.

“The whole idea of all of this is to have these really good foods, but to also end hunger,” said Lyski. “We want to be a revenue stream for food pantries long-term and build this to such a size that no child in Ohio or our area goes hungry. A kid shouldn’t have to have that challenge.”

Newman’s Own, a national social enterprise food company with the same model, has partnered with Double Comfort to help the company become even more profitable through pro bono counsel. Lyski said the first change Newman’s Own made was to put the Double Comfort mission on the front of the packaging instead of the side. She also said new products are being developed.

Since Double Comfort Foods launched in October 2017, it has won eight awards for its five products. All products are made in small batches, using fresh and often local ingredients. Locally, Double Comfort products can be found at all BrewDog USA locations and retail locations including Hills Markets, Weiland’s Market, Lucky’s Market and Celebrate Local. It is also available in Cleveland and Cincinnati.
