How the Dow Jones industrial average fared on Monday

Stocks closed higher on Monday, led by a recovery in the energy sector.

A slide in the price of oil had set the market on a downward course early in the day, but it turned higher in morning trading and remained higher the rest of the day. Health care and consumer companies also posted big gains.

On Monday:

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 106.70 points, or 0.6 percent, to 18,004.16.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 13.61 points, or 0.7 percent, to 2,094.34.

The Nasdaq composite index climbed 21.80 points, or 0.4 percent, to 4,960.02.

For the year:

The Dow is up 579.13 points, or 3.3 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 50.40 points, or 2.5 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 47.39 points, or 1.0 percent.
