Argentina court orders suspension of Uber in Buenos Aires

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — A court in Argentina has ordered the suspension of Uber's operation in Buenos Aires, acting a day after the popular ride-sharing app launched in the capital.

Uber announced Tuesday that 20,000 drivers were ready to provide its service in Buenos Aires despite road blocks set up by protesting cabbies throughout the city.

The local court ordered the mayor's office on Wednesday to "arbitrate the necessary measures to suspend any activity by the company."

The ruling comes after an appeal by unions representing taxi drivers who say Uber is operating illegally and threatens their livelihood.

The Buenos Aires mayor's office has said that Uber was not authorized to operate yet because it fails to meet some requirements for transporting passengers.
