How the Dow Jones industrial average fared on Tuesday

Stocks posted solid gains on Tuesday, led by energy companies after news reports said Saudi Arabia and Russia were working toward an agreement to cut oil production. Investors also worked through the initial batch of earnings from the first quarter of the year.

On Tuesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 164.84 points, or 0.9 percent, to 17,721.25.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 19.73 points, or 1 percent, to 2,061.72.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 38.69 points, or 0.8 percent, to 4,872.09.

For the week:

The Dow is up 144.29 points, or 0.8 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 14.12 points, or 0.7 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 21.40 points, or 0.4 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 296.22 points, or 1.7 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 17.78 points, or 0.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 135.32 points, or 2.7 percent.
