Affymetrix and BioMarin skid, Valspar and IHS rise on deals

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks that moved substantially or traded heavily Monday on the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq stock market:


Valspar Corp., up $19.39 to $103.22

The paint maker agreed to be acquired by competitor Sherwin-Williams Co. for about $9 billion.

IHS Inc., up $11.38 to $122.09

The data provider said it will combine with competitor Markit in a deal valued at $13 billion.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc., up $3.62 to $84.19

Days after it agreed to be acquired by after a Chinese insurance company, Starwood accepted a $14.41 billion offer from competitor Marriott.

PulteGroup Inc., down 35 cents to $18.30

A report by the Association of Realtors said that sales of already-built homes dropped 7 percent in February.

Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc., up $2 to $28.98

The Canadian drugmaker said CEO Mike Pearson will step down and investor Bill Ackman will join its board of directors.


Apple Inc., down 1 cent to $105.91

The company launched new iPhone and iPad models at its headquarters.

Affymetrix Inc., down $1.59 to $14.40

The maker of equipment used to analyze genetic codes rejected a buyout offer from Origin Technologies.

BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc., down $2.75 to $78.19

The company reported mixed results from a drug intended to treat a metabolic disorder.
