How the Dow Jones industrial average fared on Tuesday

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks were mixed Tuesday and ended mostly lower, led by a steep decline in drug company shares as investors worried it will become harder for the companies to raise prices. Materials companies fell along with the price of precious metals.

On Tuesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 22.40 points, or 0.1 percent, to 17,251.53.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 3.71 points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,015.93.

The Nasdaq composite index gave up 21.61 points, or 0.5 percent, to 4,728.67.

For the week:

The Dow has gained 38.22 points, or 0.2 percent.

The S&P 500 has lost 6.26 points, or 0.3 percent.

The Nasdaq has declined 19.80 points, or 0.4 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is down 173.50 points, or 1 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 28.01 points, or 1.4 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 278.74 points, or 5.6 percent.
