WASHINGTON (AP) — Job gains accelerated in October across a broad range of sectors, including professional services, retail and health care.

Retail added nearly 44,000 jobs, way up from a 5,800 gain in September. Outlets selling clothing and general merchandise, as well as auto dealers, led the surge.

Restaurants and bars also ramped up hiring, a sign of confidence that household budgets will be healthy enough for Americans to keep eating out. The sector accounted for 42,000 added jobs in October.

Hiring was also strong in higher-paying positions. Professional and business services added 78,000 jobs in October. That sector includes legal, accounting, engineering and administrative services. Health care added nearly 45,000.

Two industry groups recorded small losses: Information and transportation.

Overall, U.S. employers added a robust 271,000 jobs in October, the most since December 2014. The unemployment rate fell to 5.0 percent from 5.1 percent.
