The U.S. stock market endured its worst performance in 18 months on Thursday, driven lower by another slump in Chinese shares and heavy selling by technical traders.

For the day:

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 358.04 points, or 2.1 percent, to 16,990.69.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped 43.88 points, or 2.1 percent, to 2,035.73.

The Nasdaq composite fell 141.56 points, or 2.8 percent, to 4,877.49.

For the week:

The Dow is down 486.71 points, or 2.8 percent.

The S&P 500 index is down 55.81 points, or 2.7 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 170.75 points, or 3.4 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is down 832.38 points, or 4.7 percent.

The S&P 500 index is down 23.17 points, or 1.1 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 141.43 points, or 3 percent.
