NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A labor group billing itself as the alternative to the United Auto Workers at the Volkswagen plant in Tennessee is represented by a lawyer who touts his expertise in "union avoidance."

According to a Department of Labor filing, the American Council of Employees, or ACE, has 381 members among both the hourly and salaried workers at the Chattanooga factory. By contrast, the UAW says it had 816 members last month. That's about 55 percent of the blue-collar workforce.

ACE wants to prevent the UAW from gaining bargaining rights at its first foreign-owned automaker in the South. Its leaders previously spearheaded the successful effort to thwart the UAW in a union election at the factory last year.
