WASHINGTON (AP) — In a story Feb. 16, The Associated Press reported that consumer bank deposits in the United States were protected by the FDIC against losses resulting from hacking. The story should have specified that the FDIC protects depositors from losses only if hacking led to a bank failure. Banks maintain separate insurance to protect depositors against losses from hacking and theft.
