How the Dow Jones industrial average did Friday

The stock market had another turbulent session Friday, capping off one of the more eventful weeks on Wall Street in years. The Dow Jones industrial average soared more than 250 points following strong earnings from Morgan Stanley, General Electric and Textron as well as some encouraging U.S. economic reports.

On Friday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 263.17 points, or 1.6 percent, to 16,380.41.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 24 points, or 1.3 percent, to 1,886.76.

The Nasdaq composite gained 41.05 points, or 1 percent, to 4,258.44.

For the week:

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 163.69 points, or 1 percent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 19.37 points, or 1 percent.

The Nasdaq composite lost 17.80 points, or 0.4 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is down 196.25 points, or 1.2 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 38.40 points, or 2.1 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 81.85 points, or 2 percent.
