The Dow Jones industrial average plunged 334 points Thursday, its worst day of the year, as a decline in energy stocks and worries about the global economy sent investors fleeing out of the market.

On Thursday:

The Dow Jones industrial average plunged 334.97 points, or 2 percent, to 16,659.25.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 40.68 points, or 2.1 percent, to 1,928.21.

The Nasdaq composite lost 90.26 points, or 2 percent, to 4,378.34.

For the week:

The Dow Jones industrial average is down 350.44 points, or 2.1 percent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index is down 39.69 points, or 2 percent.

The Nasdaq composite is down 97.29 points, or 2.2 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 82.59 points, or 0.5 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 79.85 points, or 4.3 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 201.75 points, or 4.8 percent.
