How the Dow Jones industrial average did Thursday

The stock market sputtered to an indecisive close Thursday, taking a pause after three straight days of losses. Small-company stocks, which have slumped 10 percent from their early-July peak into what's known as a "correction," recovered the most.

On Thursday:

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 3.66 points, or 0.02 percent, to 16,801.05.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 0.01 of a point to 1,946.17.

The Nasdaq composite rose 8.11 points, or 0.2 percent, to 4,430.19.

For the week:

The Dow is down 312.10 points, or 1.8 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 36.68 points, or 1.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 82 points, or 1.8 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 224.39 points, or 1.4 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 97.81 points, or 5.3 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 253.60 points, or 6.1 percent.
