US stocks edge higher in early trading

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are opening slightly higher as investors set aside worries about the protests in Hong Kong.

The Dow Jones industrial average edged up 12 points, or 0.1 percent, to 17,079 as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time Tuesday.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose a fraction of a point to 1,977. The Nasdaq composite rose three points, or 0.1 percent, to 4,509.

EBay rose 8 percent, the most in the S&P 500 index, after the company said it would spin off the mobile payment service PayPal. EBay had faced pressure from shareholders to make the split.

Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.50 percent.
