How the Dow Jones industrial average did Wednesday

U.S. stocks rebounded Wednesday and had their best performance in more than a month, led by gains in health care and consumer staples companies. Once again, investors were willing to step in to buy any noticeable dip in the market, even as more bad news emerged about Europe's economy and worries over violence in Iraq and Syria continued.

On Wednesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 154.19 points, or 0.9 percent, to 17,210.06.

The S&P 500 index added 15.53 points, or 0.8 percent, to 1,998.30.

The Nasdaq composite rose 46.53 points, or 1 percent, to 4,555.22.

For the week:

The Dow is down 69.68 points, or 0.4 percent.

The S&P 500 has fallen 12.10 points, or 0.6 percent.

The Nasdaq composite is down 24.57 points, or 0.5 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 633.40 points, or 3.8 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 149.94 points, or 8.1 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 378.63 points, or 9.1 percent.
