How the Dow Jones industrial average did Tuesday

Stocks fell for a second straight day Tuesday as investors were left unimpressed by Apple's latest batch of product announcements. Negative news out of Home Depot and McDonald's also weighed on the market.

On Tuesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 97.55 points, or 0.6 percent, to 17,013.87.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 13.10 points, or 0.7 percent, to 1,988.44.

The Nasdaq composite fell 40.00 points, or 0.9 percent, to 4,552.29.

For the week:

The Dow is down 123.49 points, or 0.7 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 19.27 points, or 1 percent.

The Nasdaq lost 30.61 points, or 0.7 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 437.21 points, or 2.6 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 140.08 points, or 7.6 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 375.70 points, or 9 percent.
