How the Dow Jones industrial average did Friday
The Dow Jones industrial average eked out a record on Friday after a choppy day of trading during which investors couldn't make up their minds whether to buy or sell. The Standard & Poor's 500 index also inched up, but is no higher than it was in early March, after waffling between weekly gains and losses most of that time.
On Friday:
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 32.37 points, or 0.2 percent, to 16,583.34.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 2.85 points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,878.48.
The Nasdaq composite rose 20.37 points, or 0.5 percent, to 4,071.87.
For the week:
The Dow is up 70.45 points, or 0.4 percent.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index is down 2.66 points, or 0.1 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 52.03 points, or 1.3 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 6.68 points, or 0.04 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 30.12 points, or 1.6 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 104.72 points, or 2.5 percent
