Sheriff's Office to host ALICE Training

MIAMI COUNTY —If you or your organization is looking for a new way to empower employees in violent situations, the Miami County Sheriff's Office is currently organizing a two-day ALICE course in January 2014.

The Miami County Sheriff's Office will be hosting the two-day instructor training course from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 27-28.

The cost of the program is $495. The course is designed to teach proactive, survival strategies in violent intruder or active shooter situations to law enforcement as well as school, church, hospital and workplace administrators and employees.

According to Miami County Sheriff's Office Lt. Jamie McGlinch, the first day of training will be held at the Miami County Sheriff's training center located in the country government complex on 2050 County-Road 25-A, Troy. The second day of training will be held on an off-site facility which has yet to be determined. McGlinch said the sheriff's office will be the host of the event, but the training is done by ALICE Training Institute. ALICE is an acronym for “Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate.”

“It's a new approach to how to combat violence until authorities can arrive to the scene,” McGlinch said. McGlinch said many organizations such as local hospitals and schools have requested this proactive type of training. The Upper Valley Career Center recently held a course on the ALICE training this fall.

McGlinch also said several officers from the sheriff's office will be taking the course along with those who sign up through their organizations.

According to the registration website Cvent.com, the purpose of advanced ALICE training is to educate local and school-based law enforcement, as well as church, hospital, and workplace administrators and safety professionals about our researched-based, proactive response approach to Violent Intruder events. The ALICE training program is designed to supplement current “Lock-down” or “Secure-in-Place” procedures used frequently in public schools and institutions.

Many topics to be covered include:Case Studies, Policy and Procedures Review, Infrastructure Design, Proactive Use of Technology, Community Resource Assistance, Mass Evacuations, Trauma First Aid, Practical Scenario Training andLesson Preparation.
