Eagles surprises toy shoppers witgh $100
Several local families will have a few more dollars to spend this holiday season thanks to the generosity of the Fraternal Order of Eagles (FOE) #376 in Delaware.
The organization raised nearly $7,000 during the course of the year and members have been giving it out, mostly $100 at a time, in recent days.
FOE members have been lurking around the layaway sections of department stores waiting for unsuspecting customers to pick up toys. When they do, they are surprised with $100 toward the purchase.
“If somebody came up to me and handed me $100 I would be very grateful and surprised,” FOE member Thad Jordan said.
Thus far, the organization has given nearly all of the $7,000 it raised away.
In addition to unsuspecting department store customers, they have also donated to People in Need, Andrews House the Free Store, Delaware County Veterans Services and Nationwide Children's Hospital.
“Just putting that one smile on a kids face is worth it,” Jordan said.
FOE members began raising money for the effort in February through weekly raffles. Jordan said he hopes to make it an annual tradition and raise even more money next year.
“After we give this money out, I'm sure that on that Thursday night we will start collecting again,” he said.
