TOKYO — First Solar Inc. announced Friday that it would invest approximately $100 million to develop solar power plants in Japan.

In a press release, the company said it would “partner with Japanese companies to develop, construct, and operate solar power plants, mitigating Japan’s dependence on nuclear and natural gas fuel imports.”

First Solar started in Toledo but now has its headquarters in Tempe, Ariz. Its only U.S. manufacturing facility is in Perrysburg Township.
