How the Dow Jones industrial average did Wednesday

The Dow Jones industrial average declined the most in six weeks Wednesday. The Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped for the sixth day in eight, after a poor earnings report from Macy's cast doubt on the outlook for consumer spending, a vital component of the U.S. economy. Stocks have had a lackluster August after surging in July.

The Dow fell 113.35 points, or 0.7 percent, to 15,337.66.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped 8.77 points, or 0.5 percent, to 1,685.39.

The Nasdaq composite fell 15.17 points, or 0.4 percent, to 3,669.27.

For the week:

The Dow is down 87.85 points, or 0.6 percent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index is down 6.03 points, or 0.4 percent.

The Nasdaq composite is up 9.16 points, or 0.3 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 2,233.52 points, or 17 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 259.20 points, or 18.2 percent.

The Nasdaq composite is up 649.76 points, or 21.5 percent.
