MOUNT HOPE — With the top of the line optic equipment available for bird watchers and hunters, visitors to Time and Optics on County Road 77 between Mount Hope and Berlin just might be able to see time fly.

Time and Optics is a store that sells and services all kinds of clocks. They also sell top of the line birdwatching and hunting optics.

Robert Hershberger took over the business from his mother, who ran the business his father started in 1976. Robert has been running the business since 2002.

"My dad started the business in 1976. He passed away when I was 12, and my mom kept on with the business," Hershberger said. "I grew up in the business, and always had an interest in continuing to grow it."

The store features pretty much every kind of clock available.

"We sell battery clocks, wind-up clocks, wall clocks, mantel clocks, grandfather or floor clocks" Hershberger said. "We also have the rhythm clocks, which open and play music every hour, and the new musical precious melodies clocks. We have over 200 clocks on display, from small novelty clocks to big floor clocks. We also make a point of setting up the floor clocks that we sell. Sometimes we have to travel a few hours to do that, but we want our customers to be happy with a clock that is a once-in-a-lifetime investment for them.

"We typically take clocks in at the first of the year until we are full for the year, allowing time to service the newer clocks we sell," he added. "We make it a priority for clocks purchased at Time and Optics, but also service old antique clocks. We don’t just see how many clocks we can repair in a day. Our goal is to try and do it right when we do it the first time."

Time and Optics appreciates the compliments they get about the good service their company provides. "That’s what compels us to continue doing good work," Hershberger said.

At a meeting with a national clock shop consultant, Time and Optics was told that they were one of the few stores in the United States to be able to provide this type of quality service and sales in one business.

"When we sell a wind-up clock, we see it as something that gets passed on for generations, and knowing that it gets serviced here is an additional strong selling point," he added.

The store also features binoculars and spotting scopes, with more than a dozen different brands.

"We carry three high end brands, Swarovski, Leica and Zeiss," Hershberger said. "We don’t do any camera equipment; we just carry binoculars, spotting scopes and accessories. We cater highly to the birding community, but around this time of the year; we see a lot of hunters as well, because they use the same optics.

"Another feature we have is the bird room," Hershberger said. "We sell all kinds of bird feed, feeders, houses and books."

The store also sells some locally made furniture and gifts.

"We sell quite a few glider rockers," Hershberger said. "The glider rockers fit in with some of the other high end stuff."
