U.S. stocks rose Wednesday as technology stocks traded higher for the second day in a row. Consumer companies gained steam as cruise lines rose. The beleaguered financial industry recovered some of its losses from earlier this year.

U.S. stocks rose Wednesday as technology stocks traded higher for the second day in a row. Consumer companies gained steam as cruise lines rose. The beleaguered financial industry recovered some of its losses from earlier this year.

On Wednesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average picked up 83.55 points, or 0.5 percent, to 17,716.66.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index climbed 8.94 points, or 0.4 percent, to 2,063.95.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 22.67 points, or 0.5 percent, to 4,869.29.

For the week:

The Dow is up 200.93 points, or 1.2 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 28.01 points, or 1.4 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 95.79 points, or 2 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 291.63 points, or 1.7 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 20.01 points, or 1 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 138.12 points, or 2.8 percent.
