In the U.S., several stocks were moving on corporate news Monday. Avon Products jumped 5 percent after reaching a deal with activist investors that appeared to head off a proxy fight.

Starwood Hotels gained 3 percent after China's Anbang Insurange roup raised its offer for the company.

The Dow Jones industrial average edged up seven points, less than 0.1 percent, to 17,523. Standard & Poor's 500 index was up a point to 2,036. The Nasdaq composite slipped six points to 4,766.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.89 percent.
