Classmates say that even during a tumultuous time marked by Watergate and protests over the Vietnam War, every move he made seemed to have been designed for an unblemished track to success.

His nomination is now stalled in the Senate by election-year politics, but friends who knew him then say they're at a loss to recall him ever espousing strong political views.
