U.S. stocks edged lower Tuesday as a slump in utilities offset a gain in energy stocks. Utilities dropped as bond yields climbed following a report that showed global inflation was rising from a low level. Energy stocks gained as the price of oil rose with a weakening dollar.

On Tuesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 28.43 points, or 0.2 percent, to 18,011.94.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped 2.13 points, or 0.1 percent, to 2,109.60.

The Nasdaq composite declined 6.40 points, or 0.1 percent, to 5,076.52.

For the week:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 1.26 points, or less than 0.1 percent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index climbed 2.21 points, or 0.1 percent.

The Nasdaq composite rose 6.50 points, or 0.1 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 188.87 points, or 1.1 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 50.70 points, or 2.6 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 340.47 points, or 7.2 percent.
