Cincinnati hospital system UC Health named Friday a new chief executive officer to replace retiring leader James Kingsbury.

UC Health officials named Dr. Richard Lofgren to be president and CEO of UC Health effective Dec. 2.

Lofgren is board-certified physician in internal medicine and experienced health care administrator whose career spans 35 years, according to UC Health.

Most recently, Lofgren served as senior vice president and chief clinical officer for the University Healthsystem Consortium in Chicago, according to UC Health. In that position, he was responsible for helping consortium members improve the quality, safety, efficiency and effectiveness of their clinical services as they transform their health care delivery systems, according to information provided by UC Health.

Prior to that, Lofgren held senior-level positions including chief medical officer, vice president for health care operations and chief clinical officer at UK HealthCare, the University of Kentucky’s health system.

“His unique background – a blend of both the practice and teaching of medicine in an academic medical center and senior, executive-level administrative experience in the same – will further help to distinguish and differentiate UC Health in this market; reinforce that our health system has the best to offer in clinical care; and prepare us to take on the challenges of health care in the future,” said UC Health Board Chair Margaret Buchanan in a statement provided with the announcement.

Lofgren succeeds James Kingsbury, chief executive of the system since 2010, who previously announced plans in May to retire.

Nonprofit hospital and doctor group UC Health includes the Cincinnati market’s adult Level One trauma center, University of Cincinnati Medical Center, an academic medical center affiliated with University of Cincinnati. The group includes West Chester Hospital and a joint venture on Mason’s Lindner Center of HOPE, as well as UC Physicians.

UC Health, one of the area’s largest health systems, employs approximately 10,000, system officials said.
