NEW YORK (AP) THE DEAL: Citigroup will pay Fannie Mae $968 million to resolve potential claims on residential mortgage loans originated between 2000 and 2012.

WHAT IT COVERS: The agreement includes claims for 3.7 million loans. A sizable group were originated during the U.S. housing boom.

BACK STORY: Mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac bought mortgage loans from banks like Citigroup in the run-up to the financial crisis. Many later went bad, and Fannie and Freddie said that the banks misled them by not telling them the true condition of the mortgages they were buying. They have wanted the banks to repurchase the mortgages.
