Other appointments and awards this week include Frost Brown Todd, Nationwide, Watkins Printing and Assisted Living Locaters

Several Central Ohio small businesses were recently recognized for their outstanding achievements and contributions to their communities during the 57th annual National Small Business Week, held by the U.S. Small Business Administration and celebrated virtually this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The following 2020 Columbus winners were recognized by the SBA’s Columbus District Office:  

John Rush, founder and CEO of CleanTurn was named Small Business Person of the Year. Since 2011, CleanTurn has hired individuals facing barriers to employment to provide professional cleaning and interior demolition services. In 2019, Rush secured an SBA-guaranteed loan through Ohio Statewide Development Corp.and PNC Bank to expand, bringing revitalization to Franklinton area.  

Lisa Gutierrez, owner of Dos Hermanos Taco Truck, was named Minority-Owned Small Business Person of the Year:  Gutierrez launched Dos Hermanos Taco Truck in 2012 with a borrowed food truck, $2,000 in savings and no formal business education. Dos Hermanos has benefitted from multiple SBA-backed loan programs and Gutierrez completed a nine-month entrepreneur exchange program funded by SBA’s ScaleUp America initiative. 

Inna Kinney, founder and CEO of ECDI was named the Great Lakes Region Women’s Business Center of the Year Award and Micro Lender of the Year. As the only center of its kind funded by the SBA, the Women’s Business Center of Central Ohio works to empower women entrepreneurs with resources and tools to create strong, sustainable businesses. Since 2012, WBC has provided 4,054 hours of education programming, consulted with 1,482 entrepreneurs, helped start 671 businesses and provided more than $7 million in loans, 81 percent of which were awarded to black business owners.   

The top three Certified Development Companies of the Year includeHCDC, Ohio Statewide Development Corp. and Community Capital Development Corp. Financial institutions with a local presence and among the top 10 Lenders of the Year includeHuntington, U.S. Bank, First Financial Bank, JP Morgan Chase, United Midwest Savings Bank Fifth Third and Key Bank. 

 

 

 

Sam Quimby, an attorney with Frost Brown Todd, was the only Columbus-based private practice attorney included in the second annual World Trademark Review Global Leaders ranking. The list recognizes leading legal and corporate experts in trademark practice while giving the broader community the opportunity to benefit from their specialized knowledge and experience.  

Quimby leads FBT’s Trademark practice. She has been recognized by clients for her outstanding client service and knowledge of trademark law. This is Quimby’s second time making the WTR Global Leaders list.

Global Corporate Venturing has named Nationwide’s Erik Ross to its Powerlist 100 for the second straight year. The list honors the top 100 heads of corporate venturing units from around the globe.

Ross joined Nationwide in 2014 and spearheaded its venture capital investment strategy, including the disbursement of Nationwide’s $100 million venture capital investment fund. Under Ross’s leadership, Nationwide’s venture capital team has invested in 20 insurtech, fintech, cyber security and other developing startups to date.

Watkins Printing Co., a business specializing in publications, magazines and direct mail pieces, recently received national certification as a Women’s Business Enterprise by the Ohio River Valley Women’s Business Council, a regional certifying partner of the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council.

WBENC’s national standard of certification process includes an in-depth review of the business and site inspection. The certification process is designed to confirm the business is at least 51 percent owned, operated and controlled by a woman or women.

By including women-owned businesses among their suppliers, corporations and government agencies demonstrate their commitment to fostering diversity and the continued development of their supplier diversity programs.

Assisted Living Locators of East Columbus has hired Patrick Carle as a senior living advisor. Carle brings extensive wealth of senior living industry experience, a passion for seniors, and strong leadership and business development to his new role.
