For the fourth year, Columbus CEO partnered with employee survey firm WorkplaceDynamics of Philadelphia, Pa., to determine the region's Top Workplaces. Seventy companies ultimately made the cut. Here's how we did it.
Nominations opened last July for organizations employing at least 50 people in central Ohio. The organizations could be public, private, nonprofit, or governmental. Anyone can make a nomination but to be considered, organizations must agree to allow their employees to be surveyed on factors linked to exemplary work environments.
WorkplaceDynamics followed up with nominated workplaces in the fall and surveyed 108 that agreed to participate in the extensive evaluation process. The surveyed firms employ 28,054 people in the Columbus area, with 18,131 employees completing questionnaires about their workplaces.
The employee survey weighs responses to 23 statements to determine how companies measure up in key areas including direction and values, execution on plans, connection with employees, training and work/life balance, relationships with managers, employee engagement, and pay and benefits.
WorkplaceDynamics CEO Doug Claffey says his firm's research has shown employees in top workplaces share "a strong belief in where the organization is headed, how it's going to get there, and the feeling that everyone is in it together."
Along with analyzing survey results, WorkplaceDynamics ran statistical tests to identify any questionable results and grouped employers into size bands so organizations are ranked against those with similar numbers of employees. That helps eliminate bias stemming from smaller employers generally scoring higher than larger employers.
Rankings based on employee survey responses are the basis for determining this year's 70 Top Workplaces in Columbus-10 large, 25 midsize and 35 small organizations. In addition, companies with standout scores on specific survey questions are recognized with special awards.
