East Guernsey Board of Education President Bob Smith received the 1998 All-Southeast Region School Board Award of the Ohio School Board Association. He has served on the East Guernsey board of education for 11 years.

The New Concord Lions Club donated three "Godspeed John Glenn" banners which will mark the entrances into New Concord and wish a safe journey to hometown hero and Muskingum College alumnus John Glenn as he returns to space as a member of the Discovery space shuttle crew.
