The regular meeting of the Polk Lion Club was called to order on Tuesday, May 8 by President Lion Craig Wiley. He also welcomed members and guest. Lion Jay Linder led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of the first verse of "America" was led by Lion Linda Reynolds. Lion Ron Wiley gave the invocation. Secretary, Lion John Donley read minutes of the April 24 meeting. The minutes were approved as read. He also gave the treasury report. Motion was made by Lion Jay Linder and seconded by Lion Barbara Fisher to accept the treasurer's report. Motion passed. Lion Linda Cellar and Lion John Donley thanked everybody for their help on the calendar. The report was submitted and it is going to print.
President Lion Craig Wiley gave a report on the leadership training held on May 5. Members who attended were President Elect Lion Craig Wiley, 1st Vice President Lion Courtney Hartzler, Membership Chair Lion Linda Reynolds, Publicity Chair Janet Hoffman and PDG Lion Doug Reynolds. It was stated that the training was very good.
President Lion Craig Wiley informed the club that ice cream would be sold at the 5K Strawberry Run on June 23 at Mapleton. He will purchase strawberry and vanilla ice cream from the Polk Store. He also informed the club it was time to sign up for the shuttle at the Ashland County Fair. He passed a sign-up sheet around, asking members to sing up for at least three shifts.
The scholarship committee reported that four applications were received and after reviewing them, recommended that the club award all four applicants. Motion was made by Lion Linda Cellar and seconded by Lion Barbara Fisher to give a donation to two Mapleton students who will attend HOBY at Northern University on June 10. Motion passed. A motion was made to give a gas card to a family in Polk that experienced health issues by Lion Barbara Fisher and seconded by Lion Linda Reynolds. Motion passed. Lion Nancy Welch showed a photo of the child the club recently got him glasses and expressed the mother's thanks for her glasses and her sons glasses we purchased for them. The next meeting will be on May 22. The club will be installing 2018-19 officers. Members are encouraged to attend as this will be the last meeting until Sept. 11. Motion to adjourn was made by Lion Larry Cellar and seconded by Lion Linda Cellar.
