The Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 index edged lower Thursday as investors assessed some mixed corporate earnings reports.

Visa fell the most in the Dow after reporting a 28 percent drop in income. Avon plunged after the beauty products company reported a third-quarter loss and said the Securities and Exchange Commission is proposing a much larger penalty than it expected to settle bribery allegations.

The Dow lost 73.01 points, or 0.5 percent, to close at 15,545.75.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 6.77 points, 0.4 percent, to 1,756.54.

The Nasdaq composite dropped 10.91 points, or 0.3 percent, to 3,919.71.

The Dow is down 24.53 points, or 0.2 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 3.23 points, or 0.2 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 23.65 points, or 0.6 percent.

For the year so far:

The Dow is up 2,441.61 points, or 18.6 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 330.35 points, or 23.2 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 900.20 points, or 29.8 percent.
