Visitors to Leaders Family Farms in the fall have come to expect to get lost in the corn maze, get scared in the haunted attractions and have fun with the wide variety of other attractions at the site. This year, they can look forward to watching pumpkins shot high into the air.

The newest attraction at the farm, which held its opening night Friday, is the “Big Jack” pumpkin cannon, which was designed and built by staff members at the farm. Big Jack made its debut at the Tomato Festival Parade in August.

“Literally, we were putting the stickers on right up until the time to leave,” said Brad Leaders, who demonstrated the cannon to media Thursday.

“We did a test shot with a watermelon and were shocked that it flew over 1,700 feet,” said Kristen Leaders. On Thursday, the pumpkins were flying and they will be doing so each day the farm is open. Brad said they would like to shoot the cannon at the top of each hour.

This year’s corn maze design, which spans seven acres, wil have visitors literally going in circles.

“We have always joked about a circular maze and this year we decided to try it,” Kristen said.

There’s also the two haunted attractions, the Scream Acres Haunted Cornfield and the Pandemonium Project. Brad said a bijou scene has been added this year.

“We have been in the ‘haunting’ business for over 10 years and have really focused on the little details that make our haunted attractions among the best in Ohio,” Kristen added.

Returning are other attractions, including hayrides, gem mining, the Barnyard Bouncer Jumping Pillow and more than 30 activities for people of all ages.

Leaders Family Farms is open weekends now through Nov. 2. Hours are 7-10 p.m. Fridays, 2-10 p.m. Saturdays and 2-9 p.m. Sundays. The haunted attractions open at dusk each night. The attractions are located off U.S. Route 24 on Township Road 16 about a mile west of Napoleon.
