Huntington closing three central Ohio branches

By

Huntington Bancshares is closing three branch offices in central Ohio and nine overall in the state this fall, all of them near other Huntington locations, the bank said yesterday.

Central Ohio branches to be closed are a Downtown office at E. Broad and 4th streets, the office at 6851 N. High St. in Worthington and the office in downtown Newark.

The closings are effective Nov. 15. The workers will be allowed to apply for other Huntington jobs, the bank said.

Unlike other banks in recent years, Huntington has been adding branch offices aggressively. It also has struck deals to add locations in Giant Eagle stores in Ohio and in Meijer stores in Michigan.

The bank has 411 branches in Ohio, including 85 branches in Giant Eagle stores, 16 of which are in central Ohio.

In some cases, the bank said, the closings are a result of a duplication of services because of the new Giant Eagle offices, which have extended hours and are open on Sundays.
