Need legal expertise? Rely on lawyers who are considered among the best by their peers.
When legal concerns arise, how do you find a good lawyer? One good way is to ask other lawyers whom they would recommend for your particular needs. Or you could look for lawyers who are highly rated by their peers.
For the sixth year, Columbus CEO presents a Top Lawyers list of more than 1,100 central Ohio attorneys who have achieved elite status by being rated AV Preeminent by their peers. Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings provided this list, drawn from the legal profession’s oldest and most experienced directory of lawyers. Dating back to 1868, LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbard manages a database of more than one million lawyers and law firms worldwide.
To achieve AV Preeminent status in the Martindale-Hubbell ratings, lawyers with at least a decade of experience must first pass muster by meeting criteria for having “very high” general ethical standards. They are then examined for legal ability. The Martindale-Hubbard rating system invites confidential ratings of attorneys by other lawyers who know their professional conduct. Peers are asked to make numerical ratings based on a lawyer’s legal knowledge, analytical capabilities, judgment, communication ability and legal experience.
The result is a list of local lawyers most-highly rated by those who know them best – their legal colleagues. Individual profiles of a sampling of the area’s AV Preeminent-rated lawyers are also featured here. Lawyers do not pay to be included on this list or profiled by Columbus CEO.
The Top Lawyers list is presented alphabetically by firm name or an independent practitioner’s last name. Company contact information is included and each lawyer’s primary practice areas are shown.
Martindale-Hubbell requires the lawyers it rates to update their information, but in some cases, outdated information remains on the list. Due to the volume of lawyers listed, Columbus CEO does not separately verify every lawyer’s firm affiliation, address or practice areas. Lawyers whose information has changed are encouraged to provide an update directly to Martindale-Hubbell.

About the list
The Martindale-Hubbell® Peer Review Ratings™ are an objective indicator of a lawyer’s high ethical standards and professional ability, generated from peer evaluations.
Reviewers assess their colleagues’ general ethical standards and legal ability. The ratings appear in all formats of the Martindale-Hubbell® Law Directory, on martindale.com®, Lawyers.comSM, on the LexisNexis services and mobile apps.
The General Ethical Standards rating denotes adherence to professional standards of conduct and ethics, reliability, diligence and other criteria relevant to the discharge of professional responsibilities.
Legal ability ratings are based on performance in five key areas:
- Legal Knowledge: Lawyer’s familiarity with the laws governing his/her specific area of practice(s)
- Analytical Capabilities: Lawyer’s creativity in analyzing legal issues and applying technical knowledge
- Judgment: Lawyer’s demonstration of the salient factors that drive the outcome of a given case or issue.
- Communication Ability: Lawyer’s capability to communicate persuasively and credibly
- Legal Experience: Lawyer’s degree of experience in his/her specific area of practice(s)
AV Preeminent® is a significant rating accomplishment - a testament to the fact that a lawyer's peers rank him or her at the highest level of professional excellence.
