Masterson back tonight
Cleveland Indians opening day starter Justin Masterson returns to Huntington Park at 7:15 tonight on an injury rehab assignment for the Clippers.
Masterson (right knee) pitched five innings for the Clippers on July 20. He allowed two runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts against Indianapolis. He left with a 5-2 lead in a game Columbus would lose 7-5.
He had strong innings in the first and third but had control issues in innings two, four and five. He threw 71 pitches (47 strikes). The Indians are on record as wanting him to get deeper into tonight's game against Norfolk.
Tribe manager Terry Francona told reporters yesterday in Kansas City: "We want to get him a little further into the game. We told him, we said, 'Hey, go treat this like a big game. Get after it a little bit.' I think that'd be good for him, to kind of just get after it, let it fly, and just see how far he can carry that into the game."
The Clippers are in first place in the International League West Division, a game ahead of Indianapolis. The game will serve as the Columbus debut for shortstop Franciso Lindor, the top Indians prospect. Lindor joined the team Tuesday in Louisville.
