Philanthropists get ready: Big Give 24-hour donation drive begins tomorrow
The Columbus Foundation’s annual Big Give 24-hour online donation marathon begins tomorrow at 11 a.m. EST and runs through 11 a.m. EST Wednesday. The Columbus Foundation will provide a $1.1 million bonus pool for the drive; all credit card fees will be paid by the Foundation, so 100% of donations go to participating nonprofits.
The Foundation anticipates the biggest Big Give yet, thanks to higher nonprofit participation and increased support from popular Columbus businesses. Local faves are providing the following Big Give donor perks:
The first Big Give drive in November, 2011, raised more than $8.5 million for central Ohio nonprofits. The drive is one of the Columbus Foundation’s PowerPhilanthropy initiatives. PowerPhilanthropy is the Foundation’s online giving portal that allows donors to research and search nonprofits of their choosing then donate with a few mouse clicks.
Lisa Schweitzer Courtice, executive vice president of community research and grants management for the Columbus Foundation, explained PowerPhilanthropy in an interview with Columbus CEO last March. “The way we use it is unique to our organization. We built this online philanthropic platform—(a) giving market. You can go on and give to nonprofits through PowerPhilanthropy. So we thought, yeah! It’s like power walking or power jogging or power napping—you do it with rigor and zest.”
In 2012, the Columbus Foundation received record donations of $326.4 million to new and existing funds—a 31 percent increase over 2011. Grant making by the Foundation, its donors, and supporting foundations topped $96.6 million to 2,579 nonprofits in 2012.
