Just as the best presents don't always come in big boxes, plenty of good things are also small.

The SBA Columbus District Office has lots of valuable training and webinars lined up as part of National Small Business Week April 30-May 6. In addition to various webinars, free in-person opportunities include:

SBA Presents Social Media and Your Business from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday, May 1,

Ask the Expert on Starting or Sustaining Your Business on Friday, May 5, with a lunch provided by Fifth Third Bank and

Ten Keys to Running a Healthy Business from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, in Grove City.

The SBA is also looking for creative products and services to empower women and families in its National InnovateHER: Innovating for Women Business Challenge pitch contest, and the SunDown Group hosts a local competition May 19. Winners will be among a pool of semifinalists from which 10 finalists will be tapped to compete later this year for three top national awards and $70,000 in prizes.

Columbus CEO spotlights a small business every month. April features Salon by Azzaro, where personal services can redesign your hair and your body.

Employers are always looking for good ways to make their workforce smaller—at least when it comes to helping employees lose weight and get healthier. If you have an approach worth sharing, sign up by May 5 as a presenter for the 12th  Annual Ohio Employee Health & Wellness Conference sponsored by the Manufacturers’ Education Council on Aug. 22.

The best time to be small? When there’s an active shooter in your midst, unfortunately. Kendal at Granville, a senior living community, will host an active shooter training seminar, How to Limit Business and Human Loss, for nonprofit and for-profit healthcare and human services companies on Thursday.

Columbus City Schools are going small on their use of paper flyers. With the new school year in the fall, information currently sent home in backpacks of the district’s 51,000 students will be distributed instead through email, online and in the district’s new mobile app. Just another way CSC is smart!
